Enrico da Susa (died in Lyon in 1271), known as the Ostiense (Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, 1262), was one of the most brilliant European canon lawyers and glossators of the thirteenth century. Dante places him in heaven as a symbol of canonical scholarship. The Summa, containing a systematic description of canon law, is called "aurea" (gloden) at least from the Lyon edition of 1548. Passed down in over a hundred manuscripts, it enjoyed great fortune, representing throughout the centuries, the reference text for generations of canonists.
