Bolognese jurist (doc. 1190-1220), Azzone is the most eminent representative of the school of glossators. He taught for thirty years at the University of Bologna and wrote glosses on the entire Corpus Iuris; his work was then completed by his pupil Accursio. His Summa, probably composed between 1208 and 1210, contained the systematic exposition of the entire civil law and represented for centuries every jurist's handbook, indispensable tool of their professional training.
