The work of the scholar Martinelli (1599 - 1667), whose first edition dates back to 1644, intended to offer the visitor an easy tool for visiting the city. The smaller print format, the ease of consultation and the effective synthesis in the descriptions of monuments and works of art contributed to the lasting success of the guide, which had numerous reprints until the second half of the eighteenth century. The editions of 1650 and 1658, the latter expanded and engraved by Dominique Barrière, were personally edited by the author. Intended for a wide audience, but still including scholarly insights and in-depth interpretation, the guide offers itineraries distributed over ten days. The point of departure and return of the tours is located in the area with the highest concentration of hotels and the topics are sorted topographically.
