Iinouma Yokoussai, Sô-Mokou-Zoussets, [Tokyo, 1874?]
Iinouma Yokoussai was very famous among Japanese botanists of the second half of the nineteenth century (amateur and not only).
The first edition of this botanical treatise with illustrations (limited only to herbaceous plants, for a total of 20 volumes) was re-edited in 1874 by Tanaka Yosiwo and Ono Motoyoshi, to revive the author's fame and pay tribute to such an illustrious botanist, and also to help the ''internationalization" of a work otherwise unknown in the West.
This is the reason why the two curators speak of a second, revised and enhanced edition, enriched with new material made available by Yokoussai's heirs, and integrated with the names of plants in Roman characters, the scientific name of the species complete with the name of the botanical class: the revision of this part was entrusted to "Monsieur le Docteur Savatier", most likely Ludovic Savatier, military doctor, botanist and very active French explorer in South America and Japan where, precisely at the turn of the 1860s and 1870s, he had collected many plants, largely unknown to the Western world. The project of the two curators also entailed the publication of the other volumes at which Yokoussai was working at the time of his death (10 volumes on trees, and 10 dedicated to Gramineae, Cyperaceae and vascular Cryptogams), but there seems to be no trace of the latter in the repertoires.
