Andrea Alciato, Responsa, Lione, 1561
Andrea Alciato (Milan or Alzate 1492 - Pavia 1550), father of the culta school, inaugurated a humanistic approach in the study of law. Among his works it is worth mentioning the De Verborum Significatione, a commentary to the homonym title of the Digest, which shows a harmonic convergence of the reasons of philology and those of jurisprudence and illustrates in an exemplary way the principles and rules of interpretation; and the Emblemata, a collection of allegories and symbols reproduced in woodcuts, which consist of moral teachings in Latin verse. In the Responsa, Alciato pronounces negative opinion on counsel jurisprudence.
