The funeral ceremony of Cosimo II, son of Ferdinando I de' Medici and of Christina of Lorraine, was celebrated in Venice in effigy, i.e. in the absence of the deceased, in the Dominican church of the Saints John and Paul, at the initiative of those "Florentine gentlemen, who for their affairs are entertained in the city of Venetia". The ceremony was organized by Michelangelo Baglioni, vice consul of the Florentine Nation, with the collaboration of Francesco Bonsi, nephew of the cardinal, Carlo Strozzi and Giulio Strozzi, who was also the author of the Oration recited on the same day and creator of the illustrations of the text.
The engraved frontispiece reproduces the architecture set up for the funeral ceremony, which used the funerary motifs of the Medici 16th-century Florentine arrays, like the skeletons that support the Medici coat of arms, crowned and surmounted by the Florentine lily. Among the engravings is the reproduction of the catafalque, surrounded by four stucco statues, depicting Tuscany, Florence, Pisa and Siena.
