Meghillat ’Ester, Italy (?), end of 17th century
Handwritten parchment scroll (Meghillà) wrapped around wooden support, inside a small parchment paper. It testifies to the ancient tradition of the scrolls of 'Ester, a traditional Jewish wedding gift, which was read on the occasion of the feast of Purim, as prescribed by the ritual norms. Of uncertain origin, but probably manufactured in Italy, it reproduces the biblical book of 'Esther on parchment sheets sewn together with text laid out in three columns each and containing inside, as usual, a sheet of parchment bearing the blessings that accompany the reading of the Meghillat 'Ester.
